Ear mode is the careful one. Twist off the white forehead cap to expose the probe. Insert it gently into the ear canal until it sits snugly, angle it slightly back and up toward the eardrum, and press the button. The reading appears in about a second. Placement matters here, and it explains most disagreements between two consecutive readings.
